Question 1
Where is the property?
The rules in plain English
In England and Wales most garden fences, walls and gates don't need planning permission, as long as they stay under the height limits: 1m next to a road or footpath used by vehicles, and 2m everywhere else. Trellis on top counts towards the height.
Frequently asked questions
How high can a fence be without planning permission?
Usually up to 2m, or up to 1m if it's next to a road or footpath used by vehicles.
Does trellis count towards fence height?
Yes. The height is measured to the top of the trellis, from the ground on your side.
Can I replace an existing fence at the same height?
Usually yes, if the old fence was lawful. Listed buildings and conservation areas can have extra rules.
